The Appellant herein stood indicted in the High Court of
Tanzania at Dar es Salaam, for trial with and was convicted of the offence of
trafficking in Narcotic Drugs contrary to the provisions of section 16 (1) (b)
(i) of the Drugs and Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Drugs Act [Cap 95 R.E.
2002]. Subsequently, he was sentenced to go to jail for a period of
thirty-two years. Additionally, he was ordered to pay a fine of TZS
96,564,000/= being three times the market value of the drugs the subject of the
charge. The Appellant felt aggrieved by both the conviction and the sentences
which were meted out to him. He therefore preferred an appeal to this Court.
