The Appellant, a boy aged 18 years, was charged with and convicted of rape of a young girl and sentenced to 30 years’ imprisonment. He appealed on the ground that evidence against him was insufficient; sentence meted out against him was excessive and illegal, and that the trial court did not conduct a voire dire examination before taking evidence of a girl aged 12 years. The counsel for the Respondent supported the conviction but noted that the sentence awarded by the court was illegal.
